This guide will help you understand how CY soccer and our Club works, what you can expect and what will be expected of you.

BUSC is made up of individual teams that are members of the Redwood Soccer League- our “home” league or “league of registration”. The Redwood League is a member of District II in the California Youth Soccer Association North (CYSA North).  Most administrative matters are handled through the league and through the District II office of CYSA North.  District II extends from Millbrae to Salinas/Monterey.

You will register with CYSA North through BUSC and Redwood League.  Registration.

RESOURCES

You as the Coach or manager will be your team's most valuable resource.  Do not hesitate to ask questions.  The other Club members have been through this before and can guide you.

The second most valuable resource will be the Internet. This website and the Redwood League website are a wealth of information.  There is a link to the Redwood League website at the left.  We recommend going to the website and reviewing the Rules and Info section.  On the Redwood and District websites you will find links to other valuable websites- including the Delgado (formerly C3PL) and Abronzino websites (See below about Playing Leagues).

TYPES OF TEAMS

Teams that are entering CYSA competition for the first time should register as Class 3 teams. Class 3 teams are: Upper level, advanced developmental teams whose players are normally selected via tryouts and a draft. A level of play between house league (Class 4 or AYSO) and competition teams (Class 1).

Normally you would begin play in the Redwood League, with games played up and down the SF Peninsula, as far south as Palo Alto and Mountain View. Sometimes the Redwood League admits teams from District I to our immediate north (San Bruno to San Francisco)- so you might get to play games to the north as well. Redwood League would be your “playing league”.

If there are an insufficient number of Redwood League teams in your age group and gender (usually a minimum of 4) you can be referred to  D2's Class 3 Playing League (Delgado), which extends the full length of District 2 (Millbrae to Monterey). Delgado would then be your “playing league”.

After winning Redwood League (or close to it) a team can apply to play at the Class 1 level.  Class 1 teams  are first division or A-level select competition teams that play in D2's District-wide Class 1 playing league- the Abronzino Premier Youth Soccer League. Class 1 teams usually play year-round soccer, practice 2-3 times a week, often hire paid coaches, and are traveling teams that participate often in tournaments requiring overnight stays

FORMING YOUR TEAM

    • You may have a maximum of 18 players, but you don't need that many (but be prepared for injury and illness)
    • Hold try-outs and choose your players.  You may not contact players who are already on a CYSA team unless you are asking them to play for you starting the NEXT seasonal year.  (See “Poaching” and Dealing with other club teams”)
    • Play in the Spring League which is less formal to "try CY out"
    • Be sure your players (and their parents) understand the commitment involved
    • Have a team meeting/party to be sure everyone knows one another before the season starts
    • Encourage communication with the manager and coach and families on the team
    • Open a checking account and have players pay for registration and other costs (set a budget which includes fields, coaching, refs, tournament fees, uniforms and a contingency)   Fees for Fall run approximately as follows:
      Item Fees
      Registration $35-$40 per player
      Referees $65 per home game
      Trainer $70-$100 per hour
Uniform (main and change) $50-$85 per player
      Bags $20-30 per player
      Warmups $60-100 per player
      Training Equipment $150-$400 per season
Tournaments (1-5 per year) $250-$350 each

BUSC Requirements

    • !! INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION PACKAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED !! Take your time and do it correctly.   See the Registration page
    • Each new team wishing to join the club should make a presentation to the club about their team and submit a resume and 2 recommendations for each coach.
    • We encourage each team to have a USSF certified referee who will help referee our Club’s home games.  If you do not have one, the District and League regularly offer classes to become a certified referee. An AYSO certified Referee holding an Area badge or above can ‘cross certify” to a USSF license without taking a class or test. See the Club Referee Coordinator for details.
    • Each coach needs to get at least an F license before the start of the Fall season.  The District provides the coach licensing classes.  All coaches need to eventaully obtain and E/D license.

REGISTRATION

    • !! INCOMPLETE REGISTRATION PACKAGES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED !! Take your time and do it correctly.   See the Registration page

FIELDS

    • The BUSC Field Coordinator will schedule your practice and home game times as soon as Belmont Park and Rec gives us a field availability schedule and your playing league provides a game schedule.

UNIFORMS AND EQUIPMENT

    • Each BUSC will order their own team uniforms and equipment.  Note that CYSA requires 2 jersey colors.  The 2nd jersey is required for Home teams when both teams are the same color.  We suggest an inexpensive 2nd jersey as it is not worn often.
    • The Club colors are red and white.  All Club teams will use these colors.

PLAYER PASSES

    • You will get the player passes and membership cards from RWL before the season starts
    • Give the players their membership card (non picture card)
    • Have each player must sign their name on their player pass as it is printed on the card.  The signatures on the Registration form and the player pass must match . For example: If a player’s name is John Smith, he must sign his Reg. Form and his pass John Smith, not Johnny or JJ or whatever.
    • KEEP the player passes (after the players sign them)
    • Laminate the player passes, leaving about 1/4 inch around three sides and 1 inch around the 4th (preferably the short) side.
    • Punch a hole in the longer laminated side
    • Use a key ring to keep all of the passes together (you will have to give these to the ref to hold during EVERY game)
    • If a player receives a red card, the ref keeps that player’s card. Refer to the web site for what you do next

ROSTER

    • You will receive an official roster with your player passes which is yellow, called the “Golden Rod”  DO NOT LOSE THIS OR WRITE ON IT AT ALL. Place it in a plastic sheet cover and put it in your binder.
    • Once you have assigned jerseys, create a roster that includes: player's name, jersey number and CYSA number.  Pre-print your roster on avery label 8165.  Use the form downloadable on this website
    • Each game apply a sticker with your roster to the gamecard.

2. LATE SUMMER (when the schedule is posted)

    • BUSC will schedule fields for home games through the Field Coordinator.
    • BuSC Ref Coordinator will schedule your refs for home games—contact Field Coordinator and Ref Coordinator if there is a change in your schedule
    • See the referee instructions in the Rules & Information section on the RWL website.
    • Call other teams and let them know the schedule of games.  You can call the teams when you are away to find out game times and locations, however the League only REQUIRES that coaches contact opposing teams 72 hours prior to gametime.
    • Remeber to pay the referees.  $25 for the Center Ref and $20 each for the Line Judges.
    • Blank game cards will be provided by the league registrar to each team. We usually do NOT have extras. Be sure to have them with you at the field for your home games. Referees do NOT have them.

3. DURING THE FALL SEASON

FOR EVERY GAME BRING:

    • Player passes
    • Pre-printed (label) roster for game card
    • Game Card if you are the home team
    • Official roster (goldenrod copy from RWL)
    • Official USYSA registration forms (yellow copy) for each player with the medical release.
    • First aid kit (including "instant" ice packs) and cell phone (if available)
    • Your coach (or the manager) signs the game card
    • After the game: Promptly report score to League web site

HOME GAMES:

    • Notify visitors of game time, field location and directions at least 72 hours in advance (most teams have their home field location on the web site).
    • As a courtesy, game times should be announced as soon as possible
    • Check field schedule to see if you need to set up and/or break down the field (corner flags, goals, and nets)
    • Bring inflated game ball and “pinnies” in case you have to change uniform colors (at home games only)
    • Each coach/manager signs game card
    • After: Mail game card as indicated on web site and promptly report score to web site

Other thoughts:

    • Communicating through email is wonderful; require  it as a tool for team communications.
    • Keep a binder with everything in it and take the binder to every game (keep it in the car). Make a copy in case you lose it
    • Binder includes: all the CYSA official documents (the player registration has the emergency information on it), CYSA Manual, game cards, rosters, glue stick if you do not use adhesive Avery labels), any other information related to the team
    • After the first season, you will need to decide when (and if) you will play during the winter and fall
    • You will also need to recruit new players if you have attrition; be aware that poaching is illegal.
    • Get ready to start over with registration in the spring!

It is a big undertaking to have a CY team and an even bigger one to run a Club.  It takes a lot of work and each team is required to volunteer to help the Club.  The camaraderie and challenges of competing together make it all worth it!
